The core of the Growth Product Manager role lies in navigating a balance between customer experience and current product capabilities. In speaking with Patsy, the Growth Product Manager of the LotusFlare eSIM app – Nomad, the role often requires pushing the boundaries when working in a constantly evolving market such as eSIM. At the end of the day, that is a reason why they have “growth” in their title.
Hi Patsy, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us more about your background and what led you to this career path?
Thanks for your invitation. I was born and raised in Xi’an, China. I went to the US when I was about 18 years old to attend college, and I earned both my Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Master’s degree in Business Analytics in the US. After 7 years of studying at university and working at a bank in the US, I wanted to change my career path to something more challenging so I moved back to Shanghai and joined a tech company as a Growth Product Operation, which is different from what I did at the bank. I faced changes, challenges and difficulties daily at work but I was fulfilled when I saw the number of users of the product growing, and more importantly, I could be creative in my work. From my perspective, facing challenges and solving problems is the best way for me to grow professionally. Before I joined Lotus Flare as a Growth Product Manager, I had 2 years of experience in growth. This will be my second year in Lotus Flare as a Growth Product Manager, and so far, I love what I do!
What’s your current role in LotusFlare and what are your key responsibilities?
My current role at Lotus Flare is the Growth Product Manager for Nomad eSIM, a mobile data marketplace developed by the LotusFlare team. My key responsibilities include growing the user base and revenue by running various campaigns and managing new capabilities that drive growth for Nomad.
Can you tell us more about Nomad eSIM?
Nomad eSIM is a business line of LotusFlare that simplifies eSIM technology to reduce the cost of mobile data services for people who travel to experience the world around us. It essentially replaces roaming charges that someone would normally be charged when they travel outside of their home country. Nomad eSIM customers don’t have to get a SIM card from the vendor at the airport and are not charged expensive roaming fees. Whether you’re traveling on vacation or for business, Nomad offers mobile data at local data rates – like you had a mobile phone plan in that particular country. In today’s world, who can live without data!? The feedback we’ve received from customers is that Nomad eSIM is now essential for their international trips, like packing toothbrushes or not forgetting a passport. It’s easy to try if you’re interested – download Nomad from the App Store and Google Play, or visit our website at www.getnomad.app for more information.
Which approach do you use when identifying and prioritizing growth opportunities within Nomad eSIM? How do you choose your growth strategy?
The eSIM market is highly competitive. To survive and grow, we must ensure, first, that the Nomad eSIM service is the best possible in terms of performance and, at the same time, that the user experience offered is friendly and simple – which is quite hard to do but will ultimately drive people to use it again. Nomad is easily accessible to anyone in the world with a compatible phone but SIM is still a relatively new technology that not everyone is familiar with so a big part of my job is to educate potential new customers on what eSIM is and how they can benefit from it. Pricing is another important factor to consider when developing growth strategies and in my role, I work to ensure that our customers can travel with ease and affordability using Nomad eSIM.
What’s the future looking like for eSIM technology from your perspective?
I used Nomad eSIM when I visited Thailand last year for my vacation. It was the first time I was able to get connected on my phone as soon as I landed in a foreign country. That was an amazing experience! My friend, who doesn’t have an eSIM-compatible phone, had to get a SIM card from the vendor at the airport and it took us at least 30 minutes to finalize the process. We had to go to different vendors to compare the prices and packages, and after we found the best one, my friend had to provide his ID, which took us a couple of extra minutes. Luckily, with eSIM, I did not have to go through this painstaking process. I think eSIM technology brings convenience and affordability to our lives. Everyone can save their time and money to do more valuable things. I think the future of eSIM technology is very bright, and Nomad eSIM has entered the eSIM era at a perfect time.
Can you share advice for aspiring growth product managers looking to start or excel career in this field?
Always learn and adapt to the market. If we want users to like and share the product, we need to think from their perspective. For example, consider what features they would like to have, or if you can provide more affordable prices. The role of a Growth Product Manager requires a lot of coordination, so you may enhance the ability that communicate with teammates transparently to ensure successful delivery.
